Three KU Syndicate Members Oppose Honorary PhD for Dr. Zakir Naik

The University of Karachi’s Syndicate has approved an honorary PhD for Dr. Zakir Naik, a well-known scholar currently visiting Pakistan.

Express News reported that the decision was made during a Syndicate meeting led by Vice Chancellor Dr. Khalid Iraqi.

However, three members nominated by the Sindh Government opposed the decision. The meeting minutes show that the Syndicate received a letter from the Governor’s Secretariat on October 1st regarding the honorary degree for Dr. Zakir Abdul Karim Naik.

While the majority voted in favor of the degree, Saadia Javed, Shahida Rahman, and Sabzwada Muazzam Qureshi objected, mainly criticizing Dr. Naik’s views on women.

Previously, Sindh’s Chancellor Kamran Tessori had recommended Dr. Naik for the honorary PhD. Following the protocol, the University of Karachi sought approval from the Sindh Government’s Universities and Boards Department. Once approved, the Syndicate meeting took place to finalize the decision.
