ISLAMABAD — The 27th Constitutional Amendment Bill was officially tabled and passed in the National Assembly, marking a significant step in Pakistan’s legislative process. The session was chaired by Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, while Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar presented the bill before the house.
Earlier, the Senate had already approved the amendment with a two-thirds majority, despite the opposition parties’ boycott of the proceedings. A total of 64 senators voted in favor, with none opposing.
Under Pakistan’s Constitution, any amendment requires a two-thirds majority in both houses of Parliament to become law.
Ruling Coalition Secures Majority
According to official data, the ruling coalition secured 237 votes in the National Assembly — comfortably exceeding the required 224 votes in the 336-member house.
The coalition’s strength breaks down as follows:
- PML-N: 125 seats
- PPP: 75 seats
- MQM: 22 seats
- PML-Q: 5 seats
- IPP: 4 seats
- Zia League, National Party, and BAP: 1 seat each
- Independents backing government: 4 members
Opposition Boycotts the Vote
On the opposition benches, 89 members opposed the government, including:
- 74 independents
- 10 from JUI-F
- 1 each from Sunni Ittehad Council, BNP, MWM, and PkMAP
Despite their absence, the ruling alliance achieved the constitutional threshold required to move the amendment forward.

With approval from both chambers, the 27th Constitutional Amendment will proceed to formal enactment following the President’s assent. The government hailed this as a milestone for legislative stability and constitutional reform in Pakistan.
