New Zealand made history on Sunday by becoming the first team to whitewash India in a Test series at home. The visitors won the third and final Test by 25 runs on Day 3 in Mumbai.
Chasing 147, India fell short, getting bowled out for 121. Ajaz Patel starred with the ball, taking six wickets in the second innings after his five-wicket haul in the first, finishing with 11 wickets in the match. Off-spinner Glenn Phillips supported Patel with three wickets. In 2021, Patel had taken all ten wickets in an innings at the same venue.
Rishabh Pant fought alone for India, scoring 64 off 57 balls on a challenging pitch. He had also scored 60 in the first innings. The rest of the lineup struggled, with no other player crossing 15 runs as India slumped to 29/5.
Earlier on Day 3, New Zealand were bowled out for 174 after resuming at 171/9. Ajaz Patel and Matt Henry added only three runs before being dismissed. Will Young led the scoring for New Zealand with a determined 51 off 100 balls, setting a competitive total.
India’s Ravindra Jadeja took five wickets in the match, securing a ten-wicket haul, while Ravichandran Ashwin grabbed three.
On Day 2, India’s spin trio—Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Washington Sundar—combined to trigger a New Zealand collapse, taking eight wickets and reducing them to 171/9 by the end of the day. New Zealand held a lead of 143 runs at that stage.
India’s Shubman Gill (90) and Rishabh Pant (60) were key in securing an early lead on a tough pitch. Washington Sundar played a solid innings, scoring an unbeaten 38 off 36 balls, including four boundaries and two sixes.
In the first innings, New Zealand reached 235 thanks to half-centuries from Will Young and Daryl Mitchell. Jadeja claimed five wickets, while Sundar took four.
