GUWAHATI – England secured a tense four-wicket win over Bangladesh in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 on Tuesday, thanks to a brilliant unbeaten 79-run knock from Heather Knight at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium.
Chasing a modest 179-run target, England faced early setbacks but managed to reach 179/6 with 23 balls to spare. Knight anchored the innings after coming to bat at 1/6, building key partnerships with Nat Sciver-Brunt (32) and Alice Capsey (20). Despite losing wickets in quick succession, Knight and Charlie Dean (27 not out) guided England home with a composed 79-run stand for the seventh wicket.
Knight’s 79* came off 111 balls and included eight fours and a six, while Dean provided steady support in the final overs.
For Bangladesh, Fahima Khatun bowled impressively, taking 3/16 in 10 overs, while Marufa Akter claimed two wickets and Sanjida Akter Meghla added one.
Earlier, Bangladesh were bowled out for 178 in 49.4 overs. Sobhana Mostary top-scored with 60 off 108 balls, including eight boundaries. Rabeya Khan added a quick-fire 43 off 27 balls with six fours and a six, giving her team a late boost. Sharmin Akhter (30) was the only other batter to reach double figures.
England’s bowlers maintained pressure throughout, led by Sophie Ecclestone, who took 3/24 in 10 overs. Linsey Smith, Alice Capsey, and Charlie Dean claimed two wickets each, while Lauren Bell picked up one.
With this victory, England climbed to the top of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup standings, tied with India on four points but ahead on net run rate.
