Why Was Hasan Nawaz Declared Bankrupt by the London High Court?

The London High Court has declared Hasan Nawaz, son of former Prime Minister and PML-N President Nawaz Sharif, bankrupt in a tax case filed by the UK government’s tax and revenue department, Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC).

Hasan Nawaz was declared bankrupt under case number 694 of 2023. The case was filed in the London High Court on August 25, 2023. His bankruptcy order was issued on April 29, 2024, after creditors pursued legal action for unpaid debts.

The UK Gazette, which keeps public records, has published the bankruptcy details. According to the record, Hasan lives at Flat 17 Avenfield House, 118 Park Lane, and serves as a company director.

    What Is a Bankruptcy Order?

Under UK law, a bankruptcy order is part of the personal insolvency process. It’s issued by the court when an individual cannot repay their debts. Once issued, the order is published in the London Gazette after being processed by The Insolvency Service.

Impact of Bankruptcy on Hasan Nawaz

A bankrupt individual cannot serve as a company director or be involved in managing a business unless they get court permission. Despite the order, Hasan continues to hold directorships in several UK-based companies.

The case against Hasan Nawaz highlights the consequences of failing to meet financial obligations under UK law, with the bankruptcy process ensuring that creditors receive payment through legal means.
