Two Chinese nationals were injured in a shooting in Karachi on Tuesday, according to local police. This incident is part of a recent wave of attacks on Chinese citizens in Pakistan, leading Beijing to demand more robust security measures.
Senior Superintendent of Police Faizan Ali confirmed the shooting but did not disclose further details. One of the injured individuals is in critical condition, reported a spokesperson from Liaquat National Hospital.
So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack. However, the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), a separatist terrorist group, previously took credit for an October explosion near Karachi’s international airport that killed two Chinese engineers. The BLA has frequently targeted Chinese nationals involved in economic projects in Pakistan over the past few years.
In response to these ongoing threats, China has intensified diplomatic pressure on Pakistan to protect its workers. Last week, China’s envoy, Jiang Zaidong, issued a rare public statement in Islamabad, expressing frustration with Pakistan’s security measures. He warned that the attacks are “unacceptable” and could affect Beijing’s investments in Pakistan, especially under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
