Pakistan has officially reconstituted three major judicial bodies following the passage of the 27th Constitutional Amendment, according to a statement issued by the Supreme Court. The restructuring aligns these bodies with the updated constitutional framework.
Supreme Judicial Council Reformed
Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail, the second most senior judge of the Supreme Court, has been nominated as a member of the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC).
His nomination was made jointly by the Chief Justice of Pakistan and the Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court under Article 175A, Clause 2(iiia).
Judicial Commission of Pakistan Updated
Justice Aamer Farooq, the senior-most judge of the Federal Constitutional Court, has been added to the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP).
This nomination came under Article 209, Clause 2(d) of the Constitution and was approved by both judicial heads.
Supreme Court Practice & Procedure Committee Reshaped
Chief Justice Yahya Afridi has nominated Justice Mandokhail as a member of the Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure) Committee formed under Section 2 of the 2023 Act.
Purpose of the Changes
The reconstituted bodies will oversee:
- Judicial accountability
- Senior appointments within the judiciary
- Court procedure and governance reforms
The Supreme Court noted that these bodies will continue functioning under the revised constitutional architecture, ensuring transparency and consistency in Pakistan’s judicial system.
