Bangladesh’s star all-rounder, Shakib Al Hasan, has officially announced his retirement from T20I cricket, with plans to end his Test career after the upcoming series against South Africa in Mirpur.
The 37-year-old former captain revealed his decision during a press conference on Thursday, ahead of Bangladesh’s second Test against India in Kanpur. Shakib mentioned that his last T20I was during the World Cup, and he felt it was time to let new players step up. He has been a key figure in Bangladesh cricket, having played 129 T20I matches, scored 2,551 runs, and taken 149 wickets.
Regarding his retirement plans, Shakib expressed his desire to play his final Test match at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka. However, this might not be possible due to security concerns, and his last Test could take place against India in Kanpur.
Shakib also addressed his legal issues in Bangladesh, where he is involved in a murder case. Despite these challenges, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) allowed him to continue playing for the national team and assured him of no issues if he returned to play.
