KARACHI: Senior Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader and former Sindh Assembly Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani passed away in Karachi on Wednesday at the age of 72 after a brief illness.
According to family sources, Durrani had suffered a brain haemorrhage a month ago and was admitted to a private hospital in Karachi. After showing improvement, he was discharged but was re-admitted 10 days ago when his condition worsened. Doctors confirmed his passing on Wednesday.
Born on October 5, 1953, in Shikarpur’s Garhi Yasin, Durrani was one of Sindh’s most respected politicians. He completed his early education at St. Patrick’s High School and earned his law degree from Sindh Muslim Government Law College. Coming from a politically active family, he entered politics in the 1980s and was first elected as a member of the Sindh Assembly in 1988.
During his long political career, Durrani served as a provincial minister three times and as Sindh Assembly Speaker twice. He was known for his loyalty to the PPP and his close association with former prime minister Benazir Bhutto and President Asif Ali Zardari.
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed deep sorrow over his passing, praising his lifelong services to democracy and the people of Sindh. PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari paid rich tribute, calling Durrani a “symbol of patience and composure” and saying his contributions to democracy will always be remembered.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah described him as a “principled and loyal leader,” while Information Minister Sharjeel Memon said his death was a great loss for both the PPP and Sindh’s political landscape.
Agha Siraj Durrani’s legacy of dedication, leadership, and service will continue to inspire generations of politicians across Sindh and Pakistan.
