Police in Lahore have arrested dozens of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) activists during ongoing protests. The demonstrations followed a nationwide call for action by PTI leader Imran Khan.
Protesters gathered at crucial locations like GPO Chowk and Minar-e-Pakistan, defying government restrictions. Law enforcement made several arrests in response as tensions rose across the city. Rangers and local police have been deployed to maintain order, increasing their presence in critical areas.
The protests, which started in Islamabad, have now spread to Lahore. PTI supporters ignored official warnings and assembled at GPO Chowk and Minar-e-Pakistan. In a significant moment, a female protester climbed the Minar-e-Pakistan Bridge and raised the PTI flag, showing the determination of the demonstrators.
As the situation escalated, authorities sealed off major roads leading in and out of Lahore, causing severe traffic disruptions and making it difficult for residents to move around the city.
The Provincial Home Department said deploying Rangers and military forces is necessary to maintain peace and secure the city. Particular focus is on protecting sensitive locations and ensuring the safety of foreign delegates attending the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit.
A senior Home Department official said, “Deploying the army and Rangers is essential for restoring calm and securing key areas in Lahore. They have the authority to detain anyone who poses a threat to public safety.”
