Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shoaib Shaheen stated that his party has no objection to Justice Yahya Afridi’s appointment as Chief Justice of Pakistan. Speaking on the Aaj News program “Spotlight,” Shaheen clarified that PTI respects Justice Afridi as a judge and individual. However, Shaheen strongly criticized the process used to implement the constitutional amendments that led to the appointment.
He stressed that PTI’s concern is not about the individual but the principle of bypassing seniority, which he warned could lead to lobbying and favoritism among judges. Shaheen also expressed concern over the 26th Constitutional Amendment, saying it disrupted the justice system.
Responding to Justice Mansoor Ali Shah’s non-selection, Pakistan Muslim League (N) leader Barrister Aqeel Malik stated that all three candidates were considered strong choices, and the selection was based on merit.
