Imran Khan’s political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has filed an urgent petition in the Islamabad High Court, requesting his release from prison due to growing security concerns amid rising tensions between Pakistan and India. The petition warns that Khan, the former prime minister, could be at risk of targeted drone strikes if the situation escalates further.
Khan has been held at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi for nearly two years, facing multiple corruption charges, which he insists are politically motivated.
PTI submitted the plea on Friday, describing the situation as a “national emergency” with military exchanges, including drone and artillery fire, increasing along the India-Pakistan border.
Zulfikar Bukhari, a senior PTI leader and close adviser to Khan, stated that Khan’s safety is the party’s top priority. He emphasized that, in this national crisis, releasing Pakistan’s most widely supported leader is crucial for maintaining national unity.
“We are on the brink of full-scale conflict with India,” Bukhari said from the UK. “In times like these, having Imran Khan at the forefront is essential for national integrity. We hope the court will grant the petition for the greater good.”
