Australian captain Pat Cummins is likely to miss the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy due to injury, according to reports on Wednesday.
Australia’s head coach, Andrew McDonald, revealed that Cummins has not been able to resume bowling, making his participation highly unlikely. McDonald told SEN Radio, “Pat Cummins hasn’t been able to bowl, so he’s heavily unlikely to play. This means we need a new captain.”
McDonald also mentioned that fast bowler Josh Hazlewood is facing fitness issues. He added, “We’ll have more medical updates in the next few days and will finalize our plans accordingly.”
In Cummins’ absence, Steven Smith and Travis Head are being considered as potential replacements for the captaincy role.
Australia is already dealing with injuries, including experienced all-rounder Mitch Marsh. The possible absence of both Cummins and Hazlewood could further weaken the team as they aim for their third Champions Trophy title.
Additionally, leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha has been sent to Sri Lanka for development. He may join the Australian team for two One Day Internationals (ODIs) against Sri Lanka before the Champions Trophy begins.
