Pakistan Railways to install signal jammers in trains

Pakistan Railways has decided to install signal jammers in all passenger trains to prevent terrorist attacks and enhance passenger safety, officials confirmed on Monday.

Each train will be fitted with three signal jammers, while security patrols will be strengthened along sensitive railway routes to ensure better protection for passengers and assets.

The move follows the October 7 blast on the Jaffar Express near Shikarpur, which derailed five carriages and injured six passengers.

The National Assembly Standing Committee on Railways approved the decision during a recent meeting and also urged authorities to take strict action against land encroachments on railway property.

According to officials, out of 16,000 acres of railway land, around 3,253 acres remain illegally occupied — including 457 acres seized by influential individuals.

Despite these challenges, Pakistan Railways has earned Rs 13.547 billion over the past five years by leasing its commercial and agricultural land. Officials said around 14,042 acres have been leased through open bidding under the Railway Property and Land Rules, 2023, approved by the Federal Cabinet.

The Real Estate Development and Marketing Company (REDAMCO), a subsidiary of the Ministry of Railways, is leading efforts to boost non-fare revenue.

Authorities also confirmed that nationwide anti-encroachment operations will continue to recover illegally occupied railway land from individuals, groups, and organizations.
