New Zealand Wins Women’s T20 World Cup Against South Africa

The New Zealand cricket team won its first-ever ICC Women’s T20 World Cup title in 2024, defeating South Africa by 32 runs on Sunday at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

After finishing runners-up in 2009 and 2010, losing to England and Australia, respectively, the Kiwis finally claimed the title this year. South Africa, led by Laura Wolvaardt, had been runners-up in the previous edition but fell short again despite a strong start in their chase.

South Africa looked set for victory after reaching 51 runs without losing a wicket while chasing New Zealand’s target of 159. However, their hopes faded as wickets fell rapidly after Tazmin Brits was dismissed. Wolvaardt scored 33 runs from 27 balls and was next to go. Only Chloe Tryon (14) and Annerie Dercksen (10) scored double figures besides the openers.

New Zealand’s bowlers excelled in the second innings, limiting South Africa to 126 runs for 9 wickets. Amelia Kerr and Rosemary Mair each took three wickets, while Eden Carson, Fran Jones, and Brooke Halliday each contributed one wicket. The Black Caps’ victory was primarily thanks to their outstanding bowling performance.

In the match, South Africa won the toss and chose to field. New Zealand set a competitive total of 158 for 5, with notable contributions from Suzie Bates (32 off 31), Kerr (43 off 38), and Halliday (38 off 28). Captain Sophie Devine scored only six runs before being dismissed by Nadine de Klerk. Despite this, the Kiwis’ total was more than enough to secure their historic win.
