    Netflix’s September 2024 Releases: What to Watch

    Netflix’s September lineup features a variety of new releases, including a big-screen adaptation of Scott Westerfeld’s dystopian sci-fi novel Uglies and the return of Emily in Paris with a twist as Emily moves to Rome. Jeremy Saulnier’s latest genre film, a new instalment of Ryan Murphy’s crime anthology series, a family drama starring Carrie Coon, Elizabeth Olsen, and Natasha Lyonne, and a rom-com series starring Kristen Bell and Adam Brody are just some of the highlights.

    Buzzy filmmaker Jeremy Saulnier’s new action film, Rebel Ridge, premieres on Netflix on Sept. 6. It stars Aaron Pierre as a man who arrives in a small town to bail out his cousin, only to have his money seized by a corrupt police force led by Chief Sandy Burnne, played by Don Johnson. He must use his skills to recover the money and seek revenge. Saulnier is known for his genre films, including Murder Party (2007), Blue Ruin (2013), Green Room (2015), and Hold the Dark (2018).

    The second part of season four of Emily in Paris arrives on Sept. 12. In it, Emily, played by Lily Collins, leaves Paris for Rome. Fans will remember that the first half of the season set up this Italian adventure.

    Uglies, based on the first book of Scott Westerfeld’s popular YA trilogy, debuts on Netflix on Sept. 13. Directed by McG, the film is set in a dystopian future where everyone is supposed “ugly” until they undergo extreme cosmetic surgery at 16 to become “pretty.” The movie stars Joey King as Tally Youngblood, with supporting roles by Chase Stokes, Keith Powers, Brianne Tju, Jan Luis Castellanos, Charmin Lee, and Laverne Cox.

    Ryan Murphy’s latest crime anthology, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menéndez Story, premieres on Sept. 19. This season explores the infamous murder and trial of the Menéndez brothers, with Cooper Koch and Nicholas Chavez starring as Erik and Lyle. Javier Bardem and Chloë Sevigny play their parents, José and Kitty. The first season, Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, received critical acclaim and earned six Emmy nominations.

    On Sept. 20, Netflix released His Three Daughters, directed by Azazel Jacobs. This emotional drama stars Carrie Coon, Elizabeth Olsen, and Natasha Lyonne as sisters who reunite in their childhood New York City apartment to care for their dying father. The film premiered at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival to widespread critical acclaim, earning a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, 80/100 on Metacritic, and a 3.7 rating on Letterboxd.

    Nobody Wants This, a new rom-com series starring Kristen Bell and Adam Brody, hits Netflix on Sept. 26. Bell plays an agnostic podcast host who unexpectedly meets a rabbi, played by Brody, at a party. The series is made by 20th Television in association with Steven Levitan Productions.

    September also brings a host of popular movies to Netflix, including Edge of Tomorrow, Black Mass, American Gangster, 300, Along Came Polly, Diary of a Mad Black Woman, The Expendables trilogy, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Field of Dreams, Jaws 1-3, Legends of the Fall, Magic Mike, Midnight Run, Paul Blart: Mall Cop 1 & 2, Shark Tale, Sonic the Hedgehog, Stand by Me, and Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit.
