Murder Case Filed Against Shakib Al Hasan

A murder case has been filed against Shakib Al Hasan, a well-known all-rounder of the Bangladesh cricket team, as reported by the Dhaka Tribune. The case was lodged by Rafiqul Islam, whose son, Rubel, was shot and killed during a protest on August 7 in Bangladesh.

Rubel was participating in a rally on Ring Road in Adabor when he was shot in the chest and abdomen. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he died on the same day. The case, filed at Adabor police station in Dhaka, names Shakib as the 28th accused and Bangladeshi actor Ferdous Ahmed as the 55th accused. Both were former MPs of the Awami League.

The case also names former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 154 others. Additionally, 400-500 unidentified individuals are accused, according to the report.

In a related development, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) appointed ex-skipper Faruque Ahmed as president after Nazmul Hassan, an ally of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, resigned. Nazmul, who also served as sports minister during Hasina’s 15-year rule, resigned by writing to the BCB. The board’s CEO, Nizam Uddin Chowdhury, confirmed that his resignation was accepted, and Faruque took charge immediately.

Nazmul had been BCB president since 2012, serving multiple terms, with his latest tenure set to end in 2025. Faruque briefly captained Bangladesh in the 1994 ICC Trophy and played seven one-day internationals, retiring from international cricket after the 1999 World Cup. He also served as the national chief selector from 2005 to 2014.
