Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for her tireless fight for democracy and human rights in Venezuela, the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced on Friday.
The 58-year-old industrial engineer has long been a symbol of resistance against President Nicolas Maduro’s authoritarian rule. Despite being barred by Venezuela’s courts in 2024 from running for president, Machado continued her campaign to bring democratic reform to her country.
The Nobel Committee praised her “unwavering courage and leadership in defending democratic freedoms and striving for peaceful political change.”
This year’s decision comes amid heightened media attention on former US President Donald Trump, who had repeatedly claimed he deserved the Nobel Peace Prize for his foreign policy efforts. Trump had received symbolic endorsements from countries including Pakistan, Israel, Armenia, and Azerbaijan, but experts predicted he would not win due to his divisive approach to global diplomacy.
The Nobel Peace Prize, valued at 11 million Swedish crowns (around $1.2 million), will be formally presented in Oslo on December 10, marking the anniversary of the death of Alfred Nobel, founder of the prestigious awards.
