A.R. Rahman and his wife of 29 years, Saira Banu, announced their separation on Tuesday through a statement shared by Saira’s lawyer, Vandana Shah. In an interview, Vandana shed light on the divorce process and addressed rumors about the split.
When asked about speculation linking their divorce to bassist Mohini Dey’s separation, which was announced at the same time, Vandana dismissed the claims. Speaking to Republic TV, she said, “There is no connection between the two. Saira and Mr. Rahman made this decision on their own.”
On the financial settlement, Vandana explained that discussions hadn’t reached that point yet but assured the public that the separation would be peaceful. She added, “Divorce is a painful decision for anyone. Saira has faced her own challenges during this marriage.”
Although Vandana didn’t disclose specific reasons for the divorce, she said, “He has been a protective husband, and she has been a good wife. I know the reason, but I cannot share it. Both are focused on creating meaningful futures, whether together or apart.”
She also addressed questions about the couple’s appearance at the Ambani wedding in July, where they were seen together. Vandana clarified there was no pretense, emphasizing that their behavior was genuine.
When asked about Rahman’s use of the hashtag “#ARSairaBreakup” in their announcement, Vandana chose not to comment but highlighted the respect both showed in their separation. “It has been a long marriage with its own challenges. Their joint statement shows mutual respect and dignity,” she noted.
The couple’s statement read, “After many years of marriage, Mrs. Saira and Mr. A.R. Rahman have made the difficult decision to separate. Despite their deep love, emotional strains have created a gap they feel cannot be bridged. They request privacy during this challenging time.”
Rahman also shared a poetic note on social media, thanking their friends and reflecting on the emotional weight of the decision. The couple, who were married for nearly three decades, have chosen to end their partnership on a respectful and positive note.
