Lahore saw a slight improvement in smog levels on Sunday, but the Punjab government remains committed to using artificial rain to tackle worsening air quality and protect millions from pollution.
State-run media reported that the government successfully tested artificial rain using local technology to reduce smog. According to Radio Pakistan, a “cloud seeding” operation was conducted in Jhelum, Chakwal, Talagang, and Gujar Khan on Friday. Within hours, it led to rainfall in Jhelum and Gujar Khan.
Cloud seeding is a weather modification method that boosts a cloud’s ability to produce rain or snow by adding tiny ice particles to subfreezing clouds.
Last December, Lahore carried out a similar cloud seeding experiment with help from the United Arab Emirates. The UAE sent two specialized aircraft and a technical team, who waited for the right conditions before conducting the operation.
Since last month, Punjab—especially Lahore—has been covered in toxic smog. This smog forms when cold air traps dust, emissions from low-grade diesel, and smoke from illegal crop burning, significantly worsening air quality.
