Karachi Schools Closed Amid Heavy Rain Forecast

Karachi: Local authorities announced that all public and private schools in Karachi will remain closed today (Friday) due to the heavy rain forecast.

Karachi Commissioner Hassan Ali Naqvi stated late Thursday that the decision was made after consulting the Met Office and the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA).

This decision comes as Karachi has experienced intermittent rainfall since Wednesday, with more heavy rain expected in the coming hours. The Met Office reported that a robust monsoon system near Tharparkar and India’s Rann of Kutch could bring torrential downpours and thunderstorms to Karachi, Hyderabad, and other districts.

The Met Office predicted Karachi could receive 150 to 200 millimetres of rain over three days. Intermittent rain is expected in various parts of Sindh, including Karachi, until August 31, with strong winds, thunderstorms, and heavy downpours in some areas.

PMD Meteorologist Anjum Nazir Zaighum, speaking on Geo News, said that a robust weather system is currently 270 km northeast of Karachi. He warned that the system might intensify as it moves towards the Arabian Sea, potentially forming a cyclone storm that could last about one and a half days. Typically, cyclones in the Arabian Sea last three to four days.

In addition to Karachi, schools in Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas, Sajawal, Badin, Tando Allahyar, and Sanghar will also be closed today due to the rain forecast.
