Karachi on high alert as potential cyclone approaches

Karachi is on high alert as a potential cyclone approaches, bringing heavy rain and strong winds. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has warned that a deep depression over Rann of Kutch, India, may intensify into a Cyclonic Storm (CS) as it moves toward the northeast Arabian Sea and Sindh coast by Friday morning.

Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab has urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel, especially advising motorcyclists to stay off the roads. He emphasized on social media that heavier rain and strong winds are expected soon.

The PMD has predicted widespread rain and thunderstorms across Karachi and other districts in Sindh, including Tharparkar, Badin, Thatta, Sujawal, and Hyderabad. Some areas might experience hefty downpours. Similar weather is expected in parts of Balochistan, such as Hub, Lasbella, and Gwadar, from August 30 to September 1.

Authorities are concerned about flooding in low-lying areas and flash floods in hill torrents. The PMD also warned that sea conditions could become rough, with winds reaching up to 70 km/hour. Fishermen in Sindh and Balochistan are advised to stay onshore until the weather improves.
If the system develops into a cyclonic storm, it will be named “Asna,” meaning “highest” and “brighter.” This would be a rare event for the monsoon season in Sindh’s coastal areas.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has ordered all relevant departments to be fully prepared. Hospitals are on standby, fishermen have been warned, and the Irrigation Department monitors water reservoirs. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has also issued a nationwide alert, anticipating heavy rains and thunderstorms across Sindh, Punjab, and Balochistan.

Karachi’s Commissioner has announced the closure of all public and private schools on August 30 to protect students and staff. The public is advised to stay vigilant and follow local authorities’ instructions for safety.
The ongoing monsoon season has caused disruptions in Pakistan and neighbouring India.
