South African fast bowler Kagiso Rabada made history during the first Test against Bangladesh by becoming the fastest to reach 300 Test wickets, surpassing Pakistan’s legendary pacer Waqar Younis.
Rabada achieved this milestone by bowling 11,817 deliveries, breaking Waqar’s previous record of 12,602 deliveries.
He reached the 300-wicket mark by dismissing Bangladesh’s wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim, who scored 11 runs, on the opening day of the Test series.
Bangladesh struggled throughout the match, collapsing for only 106 runs. Mahmudul Hasan Joy was the top scorer for the team, managing just 30 runs.
Rabada, along with teammates Wiaan Mulder and Keshav Maharaj, dominated the Bangladeshi batting lineup. Each bowler took three wickets, placing South Africa in a strong position.
The day ended on a high for the Proteas as Rabada’s remarkable performance cemented his name in cricketing history.
This Test series is taking place amid political unrest in Bangladesh following the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajid.
Notably absent from the series is all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, who had intended to play his final Test series at home but withdrew due to security concerns related to the ongoing turmoil.
Shakib, a member of parliament for the Awami League, has also been implicated in a murder case connected to the protests, adding to the complexity of the situation.
