Indian folk singer Sharda Sinha passed away on Tuesday due to cancer complications, as reported by Indian media.
The 72-year-old singer was admitted to AIIMS-Delhi for treatment on October 25. AIIMS confirmed that she passed away at 9:20 pm due to refractory shock caused by septicemia.
Her son shared the heartbreaking news on social media, saying her prayers and love will always remain with them. He expressed that Goddess Chhathi Maiya has called her, and she is no longer with them physically.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his sorrow, stating, “I am deeply saddened by the demise of Sharda Sinhaji. Her Maithili and Bhojpuri folk songs have been popular for decades. Her passing is a huge loss to the music world. Om Shanti!”
PM Modi noted the enduring impact of her songs, especially those associated with the Chhath festival. Health Minister JP Nadda visited AIIMS the night before to monitor her condition and provide support.
Sharda Sinha, known for her unique voice, played a vital role in popularizing Maithili folk music, especially in her home state of Bihar. She began singing at a young age in a music-loving family and continued her passion until her passing.
In 2018, she was awarded the Padma Shri for her contributions to folk music, sharing the culture of Bihar on global stages. Songs like “Bihar Ke Lala” and “Jab Hamar Siayan Ghar Aai” earned her respect and recognition. Her music celebrated themes of love, longing, and rural life, profoundly resonating with audiences in India and beyond.
