Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of Hamas, was killed in an attack in Tehran on Wednesday. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) conveyed that Haniyeh and one of his bodyguards were killed when their residence was hit. The IRGC is conducting a high-level investigation; more details will be shared later.
Hamas, which governs parts of Gaza, confirmed Haniyeh’s death. This incident is expected to heighten regional tensions. Haniyeh was in Tehran for the inauguration of Iranian President-elect Masoud Pezeshkian.
Hamas claimed that Haniyeh was killed in “a treacherous Zionist raid.” The IRGC stated that the attack resulted in Haniyeh’s death and that of his bodyguard, with the cause under investigation.
Hamas official Moussa Abu Marzouk condemned the attack as “cowardly” and promised that it would not go unanswered.
