On Tuesday, the Pakistani government informed the Islamabad High Court (IHC) that no decision had been made to try former prime minister Imran Khan in a military court.
Following this clarification, the IHC dismissed the petition filed by Imran Khan, who sought a court order to prevent a military trial in cases related to the May 9 incidents. Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb presided over the hearing.
Additional Attorney-General (AAG) Munawar Iqbal Duggal and a Ministry of Defence representative appeared in court during the session. Lawyers Uzair Bhindari and Faisal Farid Chaudhry represented Imran Khan.
The AAG assured the court that if such a decision is ever made, it will follow legal procedures. He emphasized that if the government chooses to pursue a military trial, the case would first be presented to a civil magistrate.
Last Monday, the government also informed the IHC that it had no plans to conduct Imran Khan’s military trial.
However, lawyer Bhandari expressed concern that the possibility of a military trial remains. He cited a press conference by PML-N leader Barrister Aqeel Malik, where such a trial was mentioned. Bhandari also urged the court to note a statement by the ISPR DG, who hinted at the trial without directly naming Imran Khan.
The court, after hearing both sides, dismissed the petition.
