NEW DELHI: Google has announced plans to invest $15 billion over the next five years to build a major artificial intelligence (AI) data centre in India’s southern state of Andhra Pradesh. The move marks the tech giant’s largest-ever investment in India.
According to Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian, the AI data centre campus will be built in the port city of Visakhapatnam and will have an initial capacity of 1 gigawatt, which will later expand to multiple gigawatts. Kurian described the facility as “the largest AI hub outside the United States,” adding that it will be part of a global network of AI centres spread across 12 countries.
The investment aims to support India’s growing demand for AI-driven services and strengthen Google’s infrastructure in one of its biggest markets. Earlier estimates from state officials valued the project at $10 billion, but Google has confirmed a larger figure. The Andhra Pradesh government expects the project to generate over 188,000 jobs.
The announcement comes as global tech giants like Microsoft and Amazon also ramp up investments in India’s data infrastructure. Indian business tycoons Gautam Adani and Mukesh Ambani have similarly unveiled major data centre initiatives to support the country’s expanding digital economy.
AI development requires immense computing power, and specialised data centres play a critical role in linking thousands of chips for complex operations. Google’s investment underscores its commitment to scaling AI innovation globally and catering to India’s nearly one billion internet users.
Google’s parent company, Alphabet, sees India as a vital market where YouTube and Android dominate. However, the company continues to face antitrust scrutiny in India and a lawsuit challenging its YouTube AI policies.
The new AI data centre is expected to boost India’s position as a global technology hub and further solidify Google’s leadership in the AI industry.
