Pakistan’s military leadership on Thursday urged the government to enforce stricter laws to prevent the misuse of freedom of expression, expressing concerns over “malicious propaganda” following the army’s deployment in Islamabad.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) stated after the 83rd Formation Commanders Conference at GHQ Rawalpindi: “The forum emphasized the need for the government to enact and enforce stringent laws to curb the unethical misuse of freedom of expression, which spreads lies, hatred, and polarization.”
The bi-annual meeting, chaired by Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir, was attended by corps commanders, principal staff officers, and formation commanders.
Earlier reports suggested that the government plans to amend the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act to combat fake news and misinformation. This followed the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) Islamabad march, which ended on November 27. International media and ministers debunked false claims related to the protest, including AI-generated visuals and images from Gaza.
The ISPR stressed, “Individuals spreading fake news for political or financial gain must be identified and held accountable.”
The forum reaffirmed the army’s commitment to protecting the nation from internal and external threats while remaining apolitical. It warned that using violence and sowing division for personal interests will not be tolerated.
The meeting began with prayers and tributes to the martyrs of the armed forces, law enforcement agencies, and citizens who have sacrificed their lives for Pakistan.
