Karachi: Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar said on Friday that extortion in Karachi remains a serious concern, stressing that no one would be allowed to threaten traders or disrupt business activities in the city.
Addressing a press conference, Lanjar stated that some traders had received threats after refusing to pay extortion money. He assured the public that the government is committed to maintaining peace and supporting business growth in Karachi.
“We will not permit anyone to intimidate citizens or businessmen,” the minister said.
He revealed that four suspects involved in extortion were killed in police encounters, while three others were arrested in injured condition during recent operations.
Additional Inspector General Karachi Javed Alam Odho also briefed the media, saying that CIA and SIU units had arrested over 20 extortionists in the past two weeks.
According to Odho, 118 cases of extortion were reported this year, with 44 linked to personal disputes. He said police arrested 43 extortionists last year and are still pursuing those responsible for attacks on law enforcement personnel.
Odho added that street crime in Karachi has dropped by 28%, while vehicle-snatching incidents have fallen by 19%. He credited the decline to improved intelligence-based operations and stronger policing efforts.
