The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved a 40 paisa per unit increase in electricity prices for Karachi consumers.
According to reports, this hike is part of the fuel price adjustment for August 2024. NEPRA issued a notification stating that these extra charges will appear in January 2025 electricity bills. However, the increase won’t apply to lifeline consumers who use up to 100 monthly units.
Last month, NEPRA also approved a rise of Rs 3.03 per unit to adjust for fuel prices in July 2024, which was officially announced on October 25, 2024. Those charges will appear in December 2024 bills for K-Electric customers, Karachi’s leading electricity provider.
K-Electric initially requested a 3.09 rupee increase per unit for the July adjustment, but NEPRA approved a slightly lower amount. Many Karachi residents are already struggling with inflation, and this additional increase is expected to put more pressure on their monthly budgets.
