Dubai Health Launches AI-Powered Virtual ICU

Dubai Health has launched an advanced AI-powered Virtual ICU system, designed to transform critical care in Dubai’s hospitals.

The system, currently being tested at Al Jalila Children’s Hospital, uses smart cameras and data analytics to detect early signs of patient distress. Once abnormalities are detected, the system instantly alerts medical staff for timely intervention.

Unveiled ahead of GITEX Global 2025, the initiative highlights Dubai Health’s focus on innovation and patient safety.

    How the Virtual ICU Works
Hend Majed Al Abbar, Director of the AI Enablement Department at Dubai Health, explained that the Virtual ICU integrates AI-enabled cameras with the Salama electronic medical record system. These cameras monitor facial expressions, movements, and skin tone in real time, helping identify subtle signs of deterioration.

The ten-bed pilot is also remotely monitored by specialists at the National Children’s Hospital in Washington, D.C., ensuring 24-hour oversight and collaboration. The full launch is planned for December 2025, with expansion across Dubai hospitals based on pilot results.

    Benefits for Critical Care
The Virtual ICU combines visual analytics with clinical data, enhancing patient safety and improving survival rates. Continuous monitoring of vital signs such as heart rate and blood pressure ensures no detail is missed.

Al Abbar said the system aims to assist—not replace—medical professionals by enabling quicker responses and better patient outcomes.

Other AI Innovations by Dubai Health
Dubai Health is also testing Virufy, an AI smartphone app that analyzes cough and breathing sounds to predict respiratory illnesses. Additionally, a new generative AI assistant, Agentic AI, supports 24/7 admissions queries at the Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU).

These projects underline Dubai Health’s commitment to integrating AI into healthcare, supporting the Dubai Social Agenda 33 and the Dubai Digital Strategy.
