AWS outage hits Fortnite, Snapchat, others

A major outage at Amazon Web Services (AWS) on Monday caused widespread disruptions across several major apps, including Fortnite, Snapchat, Coinbase, and Prime Video. The cloud computing giant confirmed it was experiencing increased “error rates and latencies” in multiple services and said engineers were “working on multiple parallel paths to accelerate recovery.”

This marks the most significant internet disruption since last year’s global CrowdStrike malfunction, which impacted hospitals, airports, and banks. AWS provides cloud infrastructure, data storage, and computing power for companies, governments, and individuals worldwide.

When asked for a statement, AWS directed Reuters to its service status page, while Amazon declined to comment.

Tech and gaming platforms hit hardest
AI startup Perplexity, cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, and trading app Robinhood all confirmed that AWS issues caused their outages. “Perplexity is down right now. The root cause is an AWS issue,” said Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas on X (formerly Twitter).

Amazon’s Prime Video, Alexa, and its shopping website were also affected, according to outage tracker Downdetector. Popular gaming platforms including Fortnite, Roblox, Clash Royale, and Clash of Clans went offline, while financial apps like Venmo and Chime also faced downtime.

In the U.S., ride-hailing app Lyft and messaging app Signal were among those hit. Signal’s president Meredith Whittaker confirmed that AWS was responsible for the disruption.

    Impact in the UK
The outage extended to the United Kingdom, where major institutions like Lloyds Bank, Bank of Scotland, Vodafone, BT, and even the HMRC website were affected, according to Downdetector’s UK reports.

Meanwhile, Elon Musk’s social media platform X appeared unaffected. “X works,” Musk posted, without elaborating.
