Afghanistan Wins Emerging Asia Cup 2024

Afghanistan A defeated Sri Lanka A in the final of the Emerging Asia Cup 2024 on Sunday, securing the trophy for the first time.

Chasing a target of 134 runs, Afghanistan completed the task with three wickets in hand, finishing at 138 runs in 18.1 overs. Opening batter Sediqullah Atal played a key role, scoring 55 runs off 55 balls in Al Amerat.

This victory followed their impressive semi-final win over India A, with Afghanistan’s bowlers playing a crucial role in their title run. Bilal Sami and Allah Ghanzanifar, who shone throughout the tournament, excelled once again in the final.

Afghanistan A’s bowlers dominated from the start. Sri Lanka A struggled to form stable partnerships as Afghanistan maintained high pressure. Saham Archchige stood out for Sri Lanka, scoring an unbeaten 64 runs off 47 balls, helping his team reach a modest total of 133 runs. Sami took 3 wickets for 22 runs, while Ghanzanifar was economical with 2 wickets for 14 runs, stifling Sri Lanka’s scoring and setting up a manageable chase for Afghanistan.

The pitch in Al Amerat proved challenging for both teams. Afghanistan A faced an early shock when opener Zubaid Akbari was dismissed for a golden duck on the first ball. However, Sediqullah Atal steadied the innings, showing composure with his 55 runs, which provided the stability needed to recover from the early setback and chase down the target.

Sri Lanka A’s bowlers struggled to shift momentum despite the early wicket, managing only three dismissals throughout Afghanistan’s innings. Mohammad Ishfaq then guided Afghanistan A to victory with calm batting towards the end.

This win marks a significant achievement for Afghanistan A, highlighting the talent in their rising ranks. Their bowling attack, led by Sami and Ghanzanifar, was decisive at key moments. The team’s balanced approach showcases their growth on the international stage. Winning the Emerging Asia Cup reflects Afghanistan’s increasing competitiveness in cricket, with promising players ready to make an impact at the senior level in the future.
