Six Judges Appointed to Federal Constitutional Court, Three Take Oath

ISLAMABAD — Pakistan’s newly created Federal Constitutional Court (FCC) became operational on Saturday as three of six newly appointed judges took oath during a ceremony held at the court building.

Chief Justice Amin Uddin Khan, who recently became the first Chief Justice of the FCC, administered the oath to Justice Aamer Farooq, Justice Syed Hasan Azhar Rizvi, and Justice Ali Baqar Najafi.

The ceremony was attended by senior Islamabad High Court (IHC) judges and Attorney General Mansoor Usman Awan. Present among the IHC judges were Justice Arbab Muhammad Tahir, Justice Khadim Hussain Soomro, Justice Muhammad Azam Khan, Justice Muhammad Asif, and Justice Inaam Ameen Minhas.

However, five IHC judges — including Justice Babar Sattar, Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri, Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan, and Justice Saman Rafat Imtiaz — did not attend the ceremony, drawing attention amid ongoing judicial debates after the 27th Constitutional Amendment.

    Official Notification Confirms Six Appointments

The Ministry of Law and Human Rights issued a formal notification confirming the appointment of six judges to the FCC.

According to the notification, the appointments were made by President Asif Ali Zardari, acting on the advice of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and following consultation with FCC Chief Justice Amin Uddin Khan.

    The appointed judges include:

    • Justice Syed Hasan Azhar Rizvi (Supreme Court)
    • Justice Aamer Farooq (Supreme Court)
    • Justice Ali Baqar Najafi (Supreme Court)
    • Justice Muhammad Karim Khan Agha (Sindh High Court)
    • Justice Rozi Khan Barrech (Chief Justice, Balochistan High Court)
    • Justice (retd) Arshad Hussain Shah, replacing Justice Musarrat Hilali, who declined the position

A New Court Under the 27th Amendment

The Federal Constitutional Court was established under the recently enacted 27th Constitutional Amendment, which Pakistan’s Parliament passed earlier this week despite intense opposition protests and walkouts.

Justice Amin Uddin Khan was sworn in as the first Chief Justice of the FCC on Friday at a high-profile ceremony at Aiwan-e-Sadr, attended by the Prime Minister, Field Marshal Asim Munir, and Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi.

Justice Amin will serve a three-year term, marking a new phase in Pakistan’s constitutional oversight and judicial structure.
