FAISALABAD: Pakistan’s new ODI captain Shaheen Shah Afridi is set to begin his leadership journey in the 50-over format with confidence and focus as his team gears up to face South Africa in the opening match of the three-match series at Iqbal Stadium, Faisalabad, on Tuesday.
“It’s an honour for me to lead Pakistan,” the 25-year-old pacer said during the pre-match press conference. “Wearing the green jersey has always been special, but captaining the side comes with added responsibility. My goal is to inspire the team and deliver consistent performances.”
Afridi, who previously captained Pakistan in T20Is, expressed optimism about the upcoming series, saying his focus is on “improving one-day cricket and leading from the front.”
⚡ Pakistan’s Full-Strength Squad Ready for Action
With Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf, and Naseem Shah forming a potent pace attack and Babar Azam, Fakhar Zaman, and Mohammad Rizwan strengthening the batting lineup, Pakistan enters the series with high morale.
South Africa, however, faces a challenge as regular skipper Temba Bavuma and seven key players — including star bowlers Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen — have been rested. Rising talent Matthew Breetzke, who made headlines earlier this year with a record-breaking 150 on debut, will lead the Proteas.
“We’re missing our core group, but this series is a great opportunity for the younger players to show their mettle,” said Breetzke.
Veteran batter Quinton de Kock will also make a much-anticipated return to ODI cricket after reversing his retirement.
🏆 International Cricket Returns to Faisalabad After 17 Years
The series holds special significance as it marks the return of international cricket to Faisalabad after 17 years. The last ODI at the venue was played in April 2008, when Pakistan defeated Bangladesh by seven wickets.
The Iqbal Stadium has hosted 16 ODIs, including four World Cup matches, and remains a memorable venue for fans. Historically, Pakistan has won nine of 12 ODIs played here, while South Africa has two wins in five appearances.
The teams have faced each other 87 times in ODIs, with South Africa leading 52–34 overall.
The remaining matches of the series will also be played on November 6 and 8 at the same venue, promising thrilling cricket for fans across the nation.
