Punjab smog crisis worsens as air pollution engulfs several cities

The smog situation in Punjab has worsened with the arrival of winter, as air pollution levels reached alarming highs in several cities.

Lahore’s air quality has become severely unhealthy, recording an AQI (Air Quality Index) of 382, ranking it among the most polluted cities in the world. However, Gujranwala topped the list in Pakistan on Saturday with an AQI of 457, followed by Faisalabad at 330 and Multan at 282.

Health experts have urged citizens to wear masks and limit outdoor activities, warning that exposure to smog can cause serious respiratory and eye problems.

Similar to last year, Punjab is once again struggling with toxic smog triggered by vehicle emissions, industrial pollution, and crop residue burning. Authorities are making renewed efforts to control the crisis as visibility drops and public health risks rise sharply.

During last year’s smog wave, the government closed schools, restricted market hours, and imposed curbs on public gatherings to minimize exposure to pollution. Despite these efforts, the air quality in Lahore once soared to 80 times above WHO’s safe limits, posing severe health threats to residents.

The government is now under pressure to take strong preventive measures to combat air pollution and protect citizens from another hazardous smog season.
