US prison authorities have refused Dr. Aafia Siddiqui access to spiritual support, sparking criticism over her treatment.
Dr. Siddiqui, a Pakistani neuroscientist jailed at FMC Carswell in Texas for allegedly attempting to kill US soldiers, remains a controversial figure. Activists claim her conviction during the “war on terror” was unjust.
The issue intensified when authorities barred Imam Omar Suleiman, a well-known spiritual leader, from visiting her. Suleiman, who has repeatedly tried to meet Dr. Siddiqui, said the denial raises concerns about possible human rights violations at the prison.
“This is a basic request for spiritual support,” Suleiman said, suggesting that such restrictions might indicate deeper issues being hidden by the authorities.
Dr. Siddiqui has previously accused US authorities of severe mistreatment and filed lawsuits claiming her rights were violated. Former inmates at FMC Carswell have also sued the facility, alleging systemic abuse and poor living conditions.
