The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has named Aaqib Javed as the new head coach of the national cricket team. His appointment comes just ahead of Pakistan’s three-match ODI and T20I series against Zimbabwe, starting November 24.
This announcement follows the departure of former Test cricketer Mohammad Yousuf, who recently stepped down from his coaching role at the National Cricket Academy.
Pakistan’s busy schedule includes matches against Zimbabwe from November 24 to December 5, followed by a tour of South Africa from December 10 to January 7. The South Africa series will feature three T20Is, three ODIs, and two Test matches.
Why Was Aaqib Javed Appointed?
PCB sources reveal that Javed’s appointment is due to his coaching experience with the Lahore Qalandars’ development squad during their tour of Zimbabwe and his previous stint as the national team’s bowling coach.
Background on the Coaching Changes
Javed’s appointment comes after Gary Kirsten resigned as head coach before the Australia tour. Following Kirsten’s exit, Jason Gillespie, the red-ball head coach, temporarily took charge of the white-ball team.
Reports suggest Kirsten left due to disagreements with the PCB and selection committee member Aaqib Javed. The conflict reportedly centered on Kirsten’s desire to hire his own support staff, which led to tensions with the board.
