Bangladesh President Dissolves Parliament Amid Protest Ultimatum

Bangladesh President Sahabuddin has dissolved the national parliament just before the deadline set by student protesters. The anti-discrimination student movement had earlier issued an ultimatum, demanding the dissolution of parliament and warning against accepting an army-led government.

On Monday, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajid fled the country shortly before protesters stormed the Prime Minister’s house. The students had given President Sahabuddin until 3 p.m. to act, threatening severe action if he did not comply.

Asif Mahmood, the coordinator of the anti-discrimination student movement, delivered the ultimatum in a video message posted on Facebook. In a national address at around 11:30 p.m. on Monday. President Sahabuddin announced that parliament would be dissolved and an interim government would be formed as soon as possible.
