YouTube has introduced a new feature that lets parents link their accounts to their teens’ accounts, giving them more involvement in their children’s online activities. This feature is part of YouTube’s effort to create a safer environment for younger users while allowing teens some independence to explore.
Through the Family Centre hub, parents can monitor their teens’ activities, including the number of videos they upload, the channels they subscribe to, and the comments they make. They will also get email alerts whenever their teens upload a new video or start a livestream. This setup encourages conversations between parents and teens about responsible content creation.
YouTube has worked with child development experts to ensure that this approach supports open communication and allows teens to grow with the knowledge that their parents are available for support. Pediatric expert Ellen Selkie believes this balance of supervision and freedom is essential for healthy teen development.
This feature, launched on September 5, is part of YouTube’s ongoing commitment to safeguarding younger users. It adds to previous efforts like limiting harmful video recommendations.
