Ronaldo Says He Is Playing His ‘Last European Championship’

Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed this year’s European Championship will be the last of his career.

HAMBURG, Germany (AP) — Cristiano Ronaldo has announced that this year’s European Championship will be his final appearance in the tournament.

The Portuguese legend shared his decision after an intense match against Slovenia, where he missed multiple goal opportunities, including a crucial penalty.

“This is my last Euros,” Ronaldo said after the game. He was visibly emotional after Jan Oblak saved his penalty, which capped a series of missed chances to score.

“What matters most in my career is the passion that still drives me to be here,” he added.

Ronaldo, making a historic sixth appearance in the Euros, has scored 14 goals in the tournament, surpassing French legend Michel Platini’s record of nine.

Team coach Roberto Martinez highlighted the significance of Ronaldo’s emotions, underscoring his commitment and dedication.

“When you witness a player, the only one to participate in six Euros, displaying the drive and belief of a young player, it’s incredible,” the Spanish coach remarked. “He has won everything and experienced it all, yet he still cares deeply. That’s why I’m grateful to him. I knew he had to be our first penalty taker, setting the tone for our path to victory.

“Our captain makes us all proud, teaching us to uphold high standards and never surrender.”
