UNITED NATIONS: Major Sania Safdar of the Pakistan Army, serving with the United Nations Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), has become the first peacekeeper from the mission to receive the 2023 ‘Certificate of Recognition’ for promoting gender equality.
The UN Department for Peace Operations in New York awarded her the certificate, presented by Colin Stewart, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Cyprus, as stated by the mission on Wednesday.
“It’s an honor to be the first peacekeeper from UNFICYP to receive this certificate, which reflects our commitment to gender equality,” Maj Safdar expressed.
Established in 2016, the UN Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award honors military peacekeepers who promote the principles of UN Security Council Resolution 1325.
Maj Safdar’s role oversees communication systems and advancing gender equality within the military. Since her deployment last year, she has led several initiatives to integrate women into the mission’s work, helping her earn this recognition.
