Meta Platforms has introduced a new AI tool called Movie Gen, which can create high-quality videos from text and image prompts. This tool puts Meta in competition with Sora OpenAI.
Movie Gen produces videos that are up to 16 seconds long from text or photos and includes video editing features. Although not yet available to the public, Meta says that Movie Gen “outperforms similar models” in the industry and is part of its mission to share AI research with the broader community.
As part of Meta’s third wave of synthetic AI innovations, Movie Gen combines image, video, audio, and 3D animation styles. It was trained using both proprietary and publicly available datasets.
Movie Gen stands out because it lets users quickly add, remove, or change visual elements, like backgrounds or styles. Unlike traditional editing tools that require special skills, Movie Gen allows precise changes, making it more accessible for everyone.
Meta clarified that Movie Gen is meant to inspire creativity rather than replace artists. The greatest goal is to make it easy for anyone to create high-quality videos and audio. Meta also hinted at future integrations with platforms like Instagram and WhatsApp.
