The government plans to increase the number of Supreme Court judges from 17 to 23, including the Chief Justice of Pakistan.
On Friday, November 1, a bill proposing this expansion will be introduced in the National Assembly. PML-N’s Barrister Danyal Chaudhary has already submitted this bill, aiming to reduce the backlog of cases by expanding the court’s capacity. The bill highlights the need for judges with expertise in fields like cybercrime, environmental law, and international trade for more specialized rulings.
The amendment also aims to distribute caseloads more evenly, easing the burden on individual judges.
In a separate statement, Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar dismissed rumors about a potential 27th constitutional amendment, stating no new amendments are currently planned. He emphasized the government’s focus on implementing the recently approved 26th amendment, which he believes will positively impact the country.
