Govt Announces Public Holiday on 1st Muharram.

Peshawar: The government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) has announced a public holiday across the province on the 1st of Muharram to mark the new Islamic year, ARY News reported on Thursday.

The Chief Secretary’s notification states that the holiday choice depends on the sighting of the moon.

The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, led by Maulana Muhammad Abdul Khabir, will meet on July 6 to sight the Muharram moon. Once the moon is sighted, the new Islamic year will be announced.

Zonal committees will, too, meet at their respective headquarters to observe the moon. Based on these observations, the Chairman of the Ravi Hilal Committee will declare the start of the new Islamic year.

Meanwhile, federal and provincial governments have implemented special security measures to maintain law and order during Muharram.
