Gaza aid flotilla blocked by Israel navy

The Israeli navy intercepted a Gaza-bound aid flotilla carrying food and medicine, sparking global outrage and protests. Live footage showed Israeli soldiers boarding the civilian boats at night, as passengers in life vests raised their hands.

The Global Sumud Flotilla, consisting of over 40 boats and 500 activists, was stopped around 70 nautical miles from Gaza. Intercepted vessels were diverted to Israel’s Ashdod port, where passengers will be deported. Among those detained were activists from South Africa, Turkey, Colombia, and Malaysia.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa called the action a “grave offence,” while Turkey labeled it “an act of terror.” Colombia expelled Israel’s diplomats and ended its trade deal after two nationals were detained. Malaysian PM Anwar Ibrahim confirmed 23 Malaysians were held.

Human rights groups expressed concern for the detainees’ safety and access to legal support. Protests erupted in Italy and Colombia, with demonstrations also planned in Greece, Ireland, and Turkey.

The flotilla, one of the largest attempts to challenge Israel’s blockade, has drawn international attention and pressure. Hamas condemned the interception, calling it a “criminal act.” Israel maintains the blockade as part of its ongoing offensive in Gaza since the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack.
