PM Shehbaz Orders Further Reduction in Power Tariffs

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif directed authorities on Friday to further reduce electricity tariffs and speed up the implementation of plans for future power generation projects.

Chairing a meeting in Islamabad, PM Shehbaz emphasized prioritizing low-cost power projects that rely on local resources. He stressed the need for environment-friendly and affordable electricity production.

During the meeting, officials updated the prime minister on the progress of ongoing hydropower projects across Pakistan. PM Shehbaz also directed the shift of existing electricity generation capacity to solar energy, highlighting that solar power is globally recognized as a low-cost, environment-friendly energy source. He noted that Pakistan is fortunate to have vast solar energy potential.

The prime minister was also briefed on efforts to phase out inefficient power plants that consume excessive fuel but produce minimal electricity. He ordered the immediate closure of such outdated plants, explaining that this step would save foreign exchange and lower electricity costs for consumers.

PM Shehbaz instructed strict action against officials obstructing reforms in the power sector. He called for an expedited upgrade of the power transmission system to meet international standards and the swift implementation of modern technology for selecting and transmitting low-cost electricity.

He stressed that all measures for power sector reforms must be completed within the specified timeline.

The meeting was attended by Federal Ministers Ahad Khan Cheema, Sardar Awais Khan Leghari, Dr. Musadik Malik, Minister of State Ali Pervaiz Malik, and other senior officials.
