A 65-year-old former union council (UC) chairman, Haji Amanullah Afridi, was shot and killed by an unidentified gunman in Karachi’s Baldia Town on Tuesday, according to officials.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police South, Syed Asad Raza, stated that the shooting occurred at 6:27 AM near Afridi’s residence. The Edhi rescue service reported that his body was taken to Civil Hospital for further procedures.
Afridi had been actively involved in local social and political circles in Baldia Town and Keamari. He was previously elected as UC chairman of Abidabad as an independent candidate, Raza added.
Incident Details
Police obtained CCTV footage showing a young man in shalwar kameez following Afridi and shooting him from behind. The footage also revealed that the assailant had been waiting on a street corner for some time before the attack.
Investigators recovered three empty shell casings from the crime scene. DIG Raza confirmed that geofencing of the area is underway to help identify the shooter.
Local police suspect personal enmity as a possible motive, but an investigation is ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
