Japan has approved an $18.5 million grant for a flood management project in Pakistan.
The Ministry of Economic Affairs announced that Japan has granted JPY 2.831 billion ($18.5 million) for the ‘Flood Management Enhancement in the Indus Basin’ project. The grant will be provided to the Government of Pakistan through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
A signing ceremony between the two countries took place at the Ministry of Economic Affairs to formalize the agreement.
The project aims to reduce the risk of damage to lives, the economy, and infrastructure. It will also improve flood forecast accuracy, strengthen flood control functions, and gather data to support disaster risk reduction measures.
Besides repairing the river structures damaged by the 2022 floods, the project will establish a network of hydrological and hydraulic observation systems for the Indus River and its tributaries.
The project will also support flood management institutions by enhancing their capacity, helping to reduce future flooding risks.
