Pakistan Responds to Chinese Envoy’s Security Concerns

Islamabad: The Foreign Office expressed “surprise” on Thursday regarding the Chinese ambassador’s comments about security issues in Pakistan.

Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, the Foreign Ministry spokesperson, stated that Ambassador Jiang Zaidong’s remarks “do not reflect the diplomatic tradition between Islamabad and Beijing.”

During a weekly press briefing, Baloch emphasized that Chinese nationals in Pakistan are “important guests.” She assured that Pakistan is committed to providing robust security for Chinese citizens, projects, and companies operating in the country.

“Islamabad is fully aware of Beijing’s concerns regarding attacks on Chinese nationals, and the Pakistani government has shared investigation updates with China,” Baloch added.

On Wednesday, Ambassador Jiang Zaidong labelled such attacks as “unacceptable” for Beijing, according to the news website Matrix Media. He stated, “It is unacceptable for us to be attacked twice in only six months.” He urged Islamabad to take “effective remedial measures” to prevent future attacks and ensure the identification and punishment of perpetrators.

Baloch found the Chinese envoy’s response “surprising.” The statement follows Jiang’s remarks on October 29 during an event in Islamabad that celebrated China’s 75th National Day. At the ceremony, Jiang raised concerns about security threats facing Chinese citizens in Pakistan and called for enhanced protective measures for them and their investments.

He noted that the safety of Chinese citizens is a top priority for President Xi Jinping, who has repeatedly raised this issue with Pakistani leaders.

In response, Deputy Prime Minister Dar reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to ensuring the safety of Chinese nationals “at all costs.” During the ceremony, Dar mentioned that most individuals involved in attacks on Chinese citizens had been arrested and reassured Chinese officials that Pakistan would spare no effort in safeguarding their lives and assets.
